We are down to four. Quite a bit of chalk, except at the top. A chance for a new champion. A chance for a four time champion. Should be an interesting semifinal. I’ll review from the top down.
The one upset was the biggest one. Eight taking down one. The Great Dismal Swamp Monsters knocked off the best team from the regular season, the Warrios, 85-75. This game was not decided on the field. It was ended in a text, when the Warriors boasted about claiming his super bowl winnings at a New Year’s golf event. After that, I only need to check the web site for the final score, I knew who’d win. Fantasy just works that way.
The Swamp Monsters won despite Kyler Murray taking the week off. You won’t win a lot of playoff games with your QB held under ten. But Brian Thomas filled the void with 22 for the Monsters. Bijan Robinson had a solid game with 13 and it was just enough to get past the Warriors. The Warriors had a decent game with 28. Bu the rest of the team was a bust. Only one other player got to ten. It was a good season for the Warriors, and they will collect division champion money. But not the big prize.
The Monsters will meet the Oky Ducks in the semifinal after a convincing 139-97 victory over Dans Destroyers. James Conner had 25 and the Chiefs defense 24. That, along with five other players north of ten points, and you get a very solid score. The Destroyers had not match. Nobody scoring twenty points. And the Destroyers, who haven’t won a championship since 2010, will have to wait another year.
And there will be no three peat. Just the that other Super Bowl, no team has ever won three in a row. Josh Allen was at it again. He scored 42 in the Marauders 129-104 win over two time defending champion Multiple Scoregasms. Allen has scored just under one hundred points in the last two games. The Marauders got twenty more from the Bengals defense, and fortunately for them didn’t need that defensive score fumbled out of the back of the end zone. Damn, wouldn’t that be a lousy way to lose.
Multiple Scoregasms join several other teams to enjoy back to back titles. It is difficult to accomplish, and among the greatest runs in league history. But it ends with a 7-8 season.
The best performance of the weekend, look no further than Cincinnati Brown. A 144-114 defeat of the Flippin Birds. And that with your quarterback getting 8, and your stud running back getting 7. Devanta Adams had 33, Mike Evans 27 and Chase Brown 23. Two more players had double digits as Cincinnati Brown look for their first title in their third season.
Disappointing end for the Birds, who worked their way into the playoffs. They remain titles and close this campaign 6-9.
SEMI FINAL PREVIEW
We’ve got an interesting combination of semi final teams. Two division winners remain. That does not always happen. We have a three time champion, a never champion and a team who hasn’t won in quite a while.
We’ll start on top. The Swamp Monsters are the lone Cinderella. The also had the second lowest score in round one but were fortunate to have just the right matchup. But that doesn’t matter now. If Kyler Murray bounces back, or the Monsters switch to Jameis Winston (I just wanted to type that… I thought it sounded funny… switch to Jameis Winston… hahahaha). Bijon Robinson is a solid option at running back.
The Oky Ducks will counter with Justin Herbert. Very similar to Kyler Murray in that both are high profile quarterbacks who are middle of the pack fantasy players. Breece Hall and James Conner will hold their own against the Swamp Monster backs. And their wide receivers may give the Ducks an advantage.
These teams met way back in week three. The Ducks took that game 113-83. Each of these teams owns one league championship. The Swamp Monsters won in 2019, not too long ago. But the Oky Ducks. Their title goes back to 2002 in Championship Game VIII. Both of these team are hungry for a second title.
In the second semifinal we have the dynasty of the mid-2010s. From 2011 to 2016 the Marauders won three of six league championship. But that last one is coming up on ten years old. If they complete this run, they will be the first team to get to four crowns. There are no other three time champions left.
At the other end of the spectrum is Cincinnati Brown. This is their third season, but their first playoff appearance. Round one went well. This matchup is likely to be tougher. Both of these teams are division champions. Brown now has a ten win season.
The Marauders boast the hottest player in the league. As long as Josh Allen stays on this run, they will be tough to beat. Matthew Stafford isn’t quite as intimidating for Brown, but Brown probably has the best running backs in the league. Saquon Barkley and Chase Brown can both put up big numbers.
The Browns won their previous meeting in week seven 91-80. I expect a higher scoring game this week. The winner of this game will be the favorite next week.
PLAYOFF TIE BREAKER
I usually forget to mention this, but this is just for clarity. And fortunately it didn’t happen last week. The tie breaker in a playoff game is the highest scoring bench player. If they are tied, then the next guy and so on until the tie is broken. In the incredibly odd chance the game is still tied after all bench players are used, the higher seed (where 1 is higher than 2) will advance.
