Both leagues are down to the final four. The best of the best. The cream of the crop. And Big Bird.
I don’t normally call a team out as Team of the Week in the playoffs as the sole objective is to win and move on. But 186 points is worth noting. So I’ll start there. The Cincinnati Eagles set the highest score of the season with a 186-89 win over the never had a chance Old England Patriots. At least the Patriots dodged the dreaded, and very rare, one hundred point loss. Well done Pats. The Eagles had eight of their nine starters score in double digits. The only player who didn’t was the kicker, who for his own sake shall remain unnamed, and he scored nine. Jared Goff was the big man on campus, scoring 50 points (I bet everyone who had Jared Goff wishes they had started him!). Davante Adams had 33 and the Broncos defense had 21. For some added context, the Patriots started Josh Allen. He had 45 points and was still five points short of Goff’s total. In my other league, we have twenty six years of history. The highest scoring game ever in that league was 193 and the 186 points scored by the Eagles this week would have been the second highest total. So this truly is an all-time great fantasy game. Congrats Eagles. Enjoy it while you can, you’ll probably score 73 next week. So who’s the lucky team that gets to play that juggernaut next week. That would be Steel City FooBall. FooBall advanced with a 106-90 victory over the Baloony Boiz. The Boiz first trip to the playoffs was a brief one. Looks like Kyler Murray got home sick, scoring only 9 points. Brian Thomas led FooBall with 22. Five other players were in double digits, including FooBall’s defense and kicker. So the top half of the BMFFL bracket was all chalk. Someone ate the chalk on the bottom half as both division winners were eliminated. The shocker was the Willow Run Flyers, who ousted the Gritz Blitz Falcons. I’m feeling a tinge of guilt for this one after being so confident the Falcons were the team to beat. Jayden Daniels led the Flyers with 27, and did his job by keeping pace with Joe Burrow. Ultimately you’d have to say the difference was the lack of performance from the Falcons two stud running backs. Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry (how the hell did one team get those two players?) combined for only thirteen points, nearly twenty points less than their projections. It’s a rough ending to a great season for the Falcons. For the Flyers, their gritty effort to stay alive continues one more week. Prestige Worldwide eliminated the Digital Scammers 130-116. The Scammers were the Halas division champion. Lamar Jackson scored 48 for the victorious Prestige. Chase Brown added another 23. Prestige scored 130 points despite having a starting receiving get nothing. Imagine what they might score if all nine players play. Before I look ahead to the BMFFL semifinals, lets see what happened in the EWFFL. EWFFL The EWFFL was even more topsy-turvy than the BMFFL. Three of the four higher seeds got bounced in round one. And I think the one that one had to come from behind to do it. The lone surviving favorite is Down the Drain. They beat Titan Kingless Court 118-115 in a really good fantasy game. Looking at the box score, it doesn’t look like a comeback as much as a Monday Night flop. The Titans had Sam Darnold on Monday night and if he just has a decent night the Titans move on. But he only scored 15, not good enough from a quarterback. And Down the Drain holds on for a first round win. This was a really good game, a shame it ends with a downer. Lamar Jackson was game MVP, he had 48 points for Down the Drain. Down the Drain becomes the favorite going forward as the only division winner remaining. Happy pulls of the upset in the other half of this bracket, eliminating MomBall 111-102. That Davante Adams guy shows up again with his 33. Jahmyr Gibbs added 22 for Happy. Patrick Mahomes exits our playoffs after a disappointing season. Remember my comment about starting Goff at the start of this article. Insiders have said there was some finger pointing and shouting in the MomBall locker room as Mahomes was started in favor of Goff. The extra thirty one points Goff scored sure would have made a difference here. From the rather be lucky than good department, the Secret Scammers, who barely snuck into the playoffs, caught the Beercats on a rare bad day, eliminating the top seed 104-73. Josh Allen scored 42 points, but only one other Scammer go to double digits. But the Beercats mounted very little in the way of a comeback. As is so often the case in fantasy football, great regular seasons unravel quickly in the playoffs. Saving the best for last, Transformation Worldwide beat rival Car Ramrod 104-103. The Chiefs defense were the top performers for Transformation, scoring 22. Nobody else was really spectacular. But it was just enough to hold off Ramrod for the one point victory and knock out the Shula division champion. For those of you in the consolation bracket in both league, enjoy your games, but I do not acknowledge them in the article. SEMI FINAL PREVIEW I’ll go EWFFL first. On the top of the bracket, the #5 and #8 seeds meet. Transformation Worldwide will likely be the fav in this matchup against the Secret Scammers. They enter the game 9-6 whereas the Scammers are still under water at 7-8. These teams played back in week eight with Transformation getting a 101-95 victory. The Scammers will have the advantage at quarterback, where Josh Allen as scored nearly one hundred points in the last two weeks alone. Bijon Robinson is the Scammers best player out of the backfield. Tua Tagovailoa isn’t on par with Allen. But Josh Jacobs and Brian Robinson are formidable at running back. Like the week eight matchup that was close, expect more of the same in this semifinal. Happy is more than just happy to be here. They are playing to win it all. But they have to go thru Down the Drain, who have been clogging up the competition recently. Prior to a week fourteen loss while resting players for the playoffs, Drain had won four in a row and seven of eight. Add a win in the playoffs and Down the Drain has a ten win season. Happy will need this game to get to the coveted ten win milestone. CJ Stroud will likely be under center for Happy in this one. Jahmyr Gibbs and Justin Jefferson are the big guns at running back and wide receiving. They will have to outduel the talented Lamar Jackson and running back Jonathon Taylor. Down the Drain won their only matchup of the season as part of their four game winning streak. But it was a doozy, a 95.9-95.0 decision. You can only hope for a game that good in the playoffs. BMFFL Turning back to the BMFFL, we look at the team that has over achieved all season versus the team that has flown under the radar, until last week. The Cincinnati Eagles set what was probably a league record for highest scoring game last week. They have eleven wins on the year. They were the third highest scoring team in the league. FooBall had the best record in the league, despite being eighth in points. This is not a game where they can expect to get by at just a hundred points scored. Jared Goff is having a good season as the Detroit Lions might actually be a serious Super Bowl contender. There is Bijan Robinson again, this time teamed up with Josh Jacobs. FooBall will be depending on Isiah Pacheco to get back into form, and hopes Najee Harris bounces back from a tough day. Not gonna lie, this feels like it could be a blow out for the Eagles. These teams split two games in the regular season. And they were both great/awful games as neither team got out of the seventies. It does keep the games close, but… ugh. The Eagles won in week three 75-73 while FooBall returned the favor in week nine 78-73. I bet the winner of this game score more than they did in those games. The second semi final is the underdogs of the post season. The Willow Run Flyers and Prestige Worldwide both had seasons not fully up to their historical form. It happens to the best of us. Jayden Daniels has been a surprise player this year, and will be the quarterback for the Flyers. Lamar Jackson has not been a surprise as a former MVP, but has been darn good. Slight advantage to Prestige’s running backs, but the game breaker may be Jamarr Chase at wide receiver for the Flyers. They played in week eleven with the Flyers getting a close 96-91 win. The winner of this game will advance to the league championship where they will be a huge underdog. But I’m getting ahead of myself. PLAYOFF TIE BREAKER I usually forget to mention this, but this is just for clarity. And fortunately it didn’t happen last week. The tie breaker in a playoff game is the highest scoring bench player. If they are tied, then the next guy and so on until the tie is broken. In the incredibly odd chance the game is still tied after all bench players are used, the higher seed (where 1 is higher than 2) will advance. |
