You can’t get much better playoff games in a fantasy tournament. The NCAA Playoff Committee would have killed for just one game like we had this weekend. Two games decided by a total of 3.9 points. And it leads to a really good championship game matchup.
In the top half of the bracket, the four seed Oky Ducks edged the Great Dismal Swamp Monsters 103-101. James Conner was game MVP for the Ducks with 22. Four other players scored in double digits for the birds. Kyler Murray had a solid game this week for the Swamp Monsters, and things looked promising. Murray had 24. The let down for the Swamp Monsters was the Tampa Bay defense, that got picked apart by Dallas Sunday night, only netted the Monsters two points and left them just short of clipping the Ducks.
For the Monsters, their season ends at 7-9. Not a great year, but it did include a semi final run. So certainly not an embarrassment.
In the other semi final we have two teams with very different league histories. The Marauders, despite not being an OG team, have been around since nearly the beginning. With three championships, they are among the most successful teams in league history.
Cincinnati Brown on the other is in their third season. The first two were a wake up call as our league is pretty competitive. To Brown’s credit, they stepped up to the challenge, were among the top teams in the league all season and were making a serious bid for the league crown.
Brown actually had two players score twenty points. Saquon Barkley was his usual stud self with 27. Brandon Aubrey, a kicker, had 21. But the rest of the team didn’t keep up. That opened the door for the Marauders. The Bengals defense came through with twenty points. And despite Josh Allen coming back to earth, the Marauders were able to squeak out a 101-99 victory.
For Brown, it closes the book on a very successful third campaign and sets the stage for bigger things next year.
WEDNESDAY GAMES !!!
YES, I know it is a terrible idea. The NFL did not consult me. They never do. But there are games on Christmas Day. Wednesday. It is not my responsibility to make sure your line up is set. And since I’ve been eliminated in every single freaking league I play in, it is also not my problem. You’ve been warned.
TAILGATER BOWL XVI
Somewhere Whitman Hart is smiling. Not sure if Whitman Hart is real person, or if that is two last names. You can email me March 1st with the answer.
But here sits two of the companies proudest alum in Tailgater Bowl XXVI. The twenty sixth edition of our championship game. The Marauders are a three time winner of this game. All of their championship coming since the league reformed in 2010. The Marauders won Tailgater Bowl XIII, XIV and XVIII. The las was in 2016 and was the end of the Marauders dynasty from 2011 to 2016.
The Oky Ducks also have a long and storied past. Their lone championship came way back in 2002 in the LCFFL Championship Game VIII. The Ducks success has often been in the regular season. They are holder of ten division titles in twenty five seasons. I think that is a record, or at least tied. The are the only team to win all four divisions, and will likely remain that way since the Shula division was abandoned when the NFL went to 17 games and we went back to three four team divisions.
Maybe more important to these teams is they play for the coveted Whitman Hart Trophy every year. This is one of two official league rivalries (which I really want to expand). This years meeting went to the Oky Ducks in week ten, 92-87. The Ducks lead the all time series 18-13.
The Ducks enter this game 11-5. They were the top wildcard in the playoffs as the four seed. The Ducks will most likely have Aaron Rodgers at QB. He’s listed as questionable, so the Ducks are preparing a gameplan for Justin Herbert as well. Rodgers, who will never win a Super Bowl with the Jets, would be just as excited to get a Tailgater Bowl ring this season.
The Marauders would appear to have a huge advantage at quarterback. But that is only if Josh Allen is healthy. Allen is also listed as questionable. Jared Goff would come off the bench if needed for the Maruaders.
The Ducks combination of Breece Hall and James Conner are a little more appealing than Rhamondre Stevenson and Aaron Jones for the Marauders. And Malik Nabers and Terry McLaurin are better than Tyreek Hill and Jayden Reed, so the Ducks have an advantage there too. Matter of fact, the Ducks have the advantage at seven of the nine starting spots according to projections and enter the game a 5.3 points favorite. That is a margin the Marauders can easily overcome.
Good Luck to both teams.
