The Destroyers needed a win to eliminate all doubt about a playoff berth. The took care of that by ensuring they would win any matchup the schedule maker threw at them. The Destroyers but the final nail in the Flippin Birds rough season 122-85.
The win was absolutely necessary for the Destroyers. It is a very rare year that a .500 record does not get you into the playoffs. And the points the Destroyers scored were just as important. I’ll get to all that as I work through the article. I will get Player of the Week out of the way quickly. Some of you might read that as a dismissive statement because it is not related to the playoffs. You might read it as a bitter statement since it happened against me. Both are probably a little bit true. Lamar You Serious got 39 from Lamar Jackson to beat the Scammers 107-74. I think that’s engouh about that. So the Kentucky Moondogs entered the weekend with a chance to win their division with a win over the Marauders. Or the risk of being eliminated from the playoffs. That’s a pretty wide span for one team with one game to go. The Marauders left the door open, only scoring 76 points. The Moondogs said “hold my beer” and only came up with 72. The loss eliminated the Moodogs from the division race and put their fate in the hands of the tie breakers. In the tie break picture was the Oky Ducks. Oh!, they were always going to win any tie break they got into. They won Team of the Year pretty easily. But they were a game back in record and had to beat iGot Boom. Boom gave the Ducks all they could handle and nearly pulled out the victory on Monday night. But the Ducks escaped with a 94-93 victory and wrapped up a spot in the playoffs. The other team in the tie break shuffle was Multiple Scoregasms. Technically, they had a shot at stealing the Lombardi division, but were quite a ways back in points. But a win would lock up a playoff spot. A loss would leave them volunerable to lsoing out on the tiebreaker. In another close game, Scoregasms got the win, dropping the Great Dismal Swamp Monsters 116-100. Total points were not longer a concern for Scoregasms. In the end, the final playoff spot came down to the Destroyers and Moondogs. The Moondogs entered the week with a 29 points advanatge over the Destroyers. But the difference in points in week fourteen flipped the standings. The Destroyers got the final wildcard spot by 21 points. But when you look at the results of the games, the margin of elimination was much closer for the Moondogs. They lost their game by 4… that would have gotten them in. And Scoregasms only won by 16. A loss there would have gotten them in. So an entire season comes down to a handful of points. I think the only other game not mentioned so far was the Warriors 115-95 defeat of the Renegades. The Warriors could have won the division with enough points gained, but came up short to Lombardi division champion Swamp Monsters. And the Renegades close out a disappointing season. PLAYOFFS – QUARTERFINALS The playoffs this year only have one team who does not have a championship on their resume. That is the I Got Boom. The other two teams in this category are both booking tee time right now. So odds are, someone will win a multiple championship. 1. SCAMMERS v 8. DANS DESTROYERS This is a matchup of two league originals. The Scammers had one of their most successful seasons ever. An eight game winning streak mid season propelled them ahead of the field. While the finsih was slow, they stayed in front of the pack to get the one seed. The Destroyers spent much of the season in the thick of the fight. A three game losing streak almost stole away what previously looked like a certain playoff season. The Scammers got by with a lot of narrow victories and fortunate matchups. They won ten games but never earned TOW. The season of good fortune comes to an end this week. Scammer predicts Destroyers 100, Scammer 98. 4. I GOT BOOM v 5. WARRIORS This spot in the playoff bracket needs a game title. It is like a certain death cage match. With three divisions, you always get the two best wildcard teams. Meaning you have two good teams, often better than at least one division winner guaranteeing one will be eliminated and not earn any prize money. It is the harshest matchup in the playoffs, and the winner is usually rewarded with the top overall seed in the next round. The Warriors and I Got Boom fill this game this season. Boom finished second to the Scammers. The ended the season third in points scored. The have the most reliable quartback in the league in Patrick Mahomes. This is not a team you want to run into. The Warriors finished in a three way tie for first in their division. They are currently working out a deal with Florida State to get a group discount on “unofficial” championship banners. Their QB situation is not as solidified as Booms, as the Warriors currently look to be rolling the dice on Jake Browning. But if Jake continues to perform, he may still produce a Cinerella story. This is like a Michigan Notre Dame football game for me. Knowing if I advance (not assuming) I have to play the winner they both lose. My first prediction is they will not both lose. My official prediction is Warriors 102, Boom 100. 2. MILFORD MARAUDERS v 7. OKY DUCKS Nothing better than when I rivalry game takes place in the post season. And the last time these teams met was downright historic. Just two weeks ago, the Oky Ducks dropped 177 on the Marauders and handed the Marauders the biggest defeat in our league’s 25 year history at 115 points. You realize if the rule change we voted on at the beginning of the year had passed, not only would the Ducks have been allowed to change the Marauders team name, at that margin they would have gotten to change the name of the Marauders children. So you know payback is on the mind of the Marauders. There’s buliten board clippings posted all over the locker room and practice facility. I have a sense for how badly the Marauders want to win this game. But I equate their changes to achieve this goal to my failed adult film career. The mind and spirit are willing, but the body in not equiped or able. The Marauders are not equiped to win this fight. Scammer predicts Oky Ducks 116, Marauders 96. 3. GREAT DISMAL SWAMP MONSTERS v 6. MULTIPLE SCOREGASMS If you are still reading this article after that last anology, thank you. The Scoregasms and Monsters deserve your respect. In this game we have the dreaded week fourteen rematch. Scoregasms are comong off a 116-100 defeat of the Swamp Monsters. But the Swamp Monsters can call scoreboard by pointing to their division champion banner in the rafters. Scoregasms swepth the season series, meaning this is not a rubber match. Damn, I was going to tie that into the last game. But Scoregasms have been struggling since losing their starting quarterback mid season. Ironically, the Swamp Monsters have been pretty steady at QB, with the same guy Scoregasms rode to a championship this year. Jalen Hurts will be a stabilizing force in the Monsters lineup. Despite the Scoregasms regular season success, I think the Swamp Monsters but the Hurts on them this year. Scammer predicts Swamp Monsters 104, Scoregasms 94. TO THE DEARLY DEPARTED Four teams in each league find themselves dealing with a huge void in their life. Out of the playoffs, no lineup to set, the only thing left to do is prepare your players for their big bowl game at the end of the season. I’ll explain more in a couple weeks. I do ask that teams eliminated from the playoffs not drop players and not pick up free agents. The intent is to not have teams eliminated influencing the results. I don’t actually have a way to control this, so it is an on your honor system. But please extend the courtesy of locking your rosters. Also, I will have to come calling for entry fees not paid. I’ve been even more passive than usual. But the bills are coming due. SECOND CHANCE SURVIVOR - SWAMP MONSTERS I wouldn't have expected this. The Oky Ducks have been so good recently. But they only had 94 this week. Ironically, they won. But the Swamp Monsters scored 100. Now they lost their game, but did claim the second chance Survivor crown. And a division title. Not all bad. |
